Welcome back to 52 Weeks of Mixtapes, my second music series for The Low Major.
Every Sunday - unless it’s a week where I’m getting out and enjoying the world (oops!) - I’ll publish a mixtape of music centered around something - a feeling, a time, a person, a place. We’re running on vibes here. Each playlist cover will be a photo or an edit that’s my own work. This shit’s organic.
Two (self-imposed) rules for this project:
Each mixtape will never be more than an hour - usually in that 45-60 minute space, long enough to run with it, but I’m not gonna brute-force any level of length. Quality over quantity, as they say.
I’m also going to try to avoid reusing artists within the same mixtape and tracks within the same month. Sometimes songs are good enough that it’d be silly to not touch on them again, so you might see some old friends.
I’ll link to the playlist, talk a little bit (like, one sentence) about each track, their ordering and why they were included, and that’ll be all. Pretty simple, and hopefully enjoyable for you.
and i feel like i am dreaming
a bass-heavy mix inspired by my first show in far too long
1 | On My Knees | RUFUS DU SOL | 7:01
Few artists are as good as riling a crowd up as RUFUS is, and hearing the crowd crackle with energy under one of their best beats is a strong way to open.
2 | Moving On [Joe Goddard Remix] | Roosevelt | 6:18
Slowing it down a bit for more of a house build from Joe Goddard, whose ability to incorporate every element of the original but completely resurface it into this odyssey of sound shines like a freshly polished diamond on this track.
3 | Gold | Excision | 4:56
I lost my mind when this played the other night.
4 | Butterflies | Skrillex | 3:16
Often panned for his perceived slight to what dubstep “used to be”, Sonny Moore has done tremendous work to rehabilitate that image through one of the strongest garage albums of this millennium. Doesn’t hurt that he grabbed superstar producer Four Tet.
5 | Purple Hat | Sofi Tukker | 2:58
Sue me, I like a little funk in my mix. Crank the bass up and let it roll over you.
6 | Midnight Dipper [Soulwax Remix] | Warmduscher | 6:10
Funk, but make it weird. It’s fantastic. Few more addictive synth hooks than this one.
7 | Say Nothing [Tchami Remix] | Flume | 4:55
Tchami is one of the kings of the modern bass movement, and his control flexes brilliantly here.
8 | Eternity [Honey & Badger Remix] | Tchami | 3:20
From remixer to remixed, but I really love the way that the vocal line slides along the synth here.
9 | Antibodies [LP Giobbi Remix] | Tensnake | 5:12
Coming back out of the heavier stuff for another great long-build track, one of those that comes towards the back end of the show and gets everyone back on their feet a lil bit.
10 | Clarity | Model Man | 4:06
Bring it home, baby.
11 | Feels Like I Am Dreaming | The Chemical Brothers | 6:58
I never listen to these guys enough, and every time I do, I’m so very impressed at the quality and depth of their sound.
Enjoy the list! I’ll see y’all next week.
