Chosen in: 1961
Chosen by: Athletic director Brother William Murphy
In 1961, Marist College began playing men’s basketball and athletic director Brother William Murphy took it upon himself to choose the team’s nickname. He noticed a sports magazine he had lying around featured a red fox on the cover, realized the animal was native to the Hudson Valley, where the school is located, and decided that “Red Foxes” would be the nickname of all Marist sports teams. This has been the case ever since, except for a brief stint in the 1970s in which the football team was known as the Vikings.
Marist’s Center Field vertical has a more complete history of the school’s nicknames, mascots, and logos.
