Florida Gulf Coast University was established in 1991 and began instruction in 1997. Its primary symbol has always been the eagle. A flying eagle formed the school’s first academic logo (which looked way too much like the letter Q) and the student newspaper debuted in 1997 as The Eagle. The school claims that the eagle is a perfect mascot for a Southwest Florida school as it “embodies the characteristics of freedom, strength, spirit, intelligence, grace, and the pursuit of excellence” and “is master of its environment but also an integral part of it”. It should then be no surprise that, when FGCU started playing intercollegiate sports in 2001, its teams were immediately known as the Eagles.
I don’t know what to tell you. Sometimes one paragraph does the trick.
