Chosen in: 1965
Chosen by: The Board of Trustees
The University of South Alabama was established in 1963 and began holding classes in 1964. In 1965, before any intercollegiate athletic programs were underway at the school, the Board of Trustees selected the jaguar as the university mascot. The men’s basketball Jaguars first took the court in 1968.
South Alabama’s costumed jaguar mascot, SouthPaw, won the Universal Cheerleading Association’s national mascot championship in 2010.
