Kennesaw State University is a fairly new institution, having been founded in 1966 as Kennesaw Junior College and then becoming a four-year school in 1976. The school’s first athletics program came in 1982, and — in “things you’d never see before Title IX” — it was actually a women’s basketball team. The school nicknamed its newborn teams the Owls as “a symbol of tenacity and intelligence”.
Since the early 1990s, Kennesaw State has employed a costumed mascot named Scrappy; it took on its current form in 2012. Alternate names include “Flappy Boi” and “Jayhawk Jr.”.
