Album: Everything I Know About Love (2022)
Artist: Laufey
Link:
In its jazzier moments, Everything I Know About Love is a gorgeous Collier-esque collection, the minute moments of a life in love that I have grown to know and appreciate through my own experiences. With gorgeous vocal tones over sweeping string arrangements and gently weaving strings, Laufey navigates falling in love with a poet’s hand, deft lyricism striking raw at the heart of the innately human nature of love.
Jacob Collier is an excellent comparison here, I think - his works in the Djesse series (which are all phenomenal, by the way, and we will be reviewing them later on) at their calmest tend to look a lot like this album. It’s comfortably soft jazz, just easy enough to envision tapping your foot to it in a smoky bar, the sort of scene that springs from the pages of a book or from the prelude to a movie’s emotional final act.
As it steps away from jazz at times, I think it falls away from what makes it so very exceptional, but Laufey’s talent is broad enough to comfortably ensure that this is, at its heart, an incredibly enjoyable album.
