If you told me that I’d be reviewing a cinematic electronica album, I’d probably have tilted my head a little bit, shrugged, and moved on with my day. If you’d have told me I’d be rating it this well… well, that may have gotten me to stop in my tracks.
It’s not that this isn’t a good recipe - cinematic music is among my favorites, and though the front half of the year has been sparse on orchestral compositions to this point, I can promise that we’ll be including more of them going forward. Electronic music, as well, is some of my favorite to listen to, especially the sparser downtempo beats that CLANN exemplifies so well with everything they create.
Further research reveals that CLANN is a collective, working on a feature film - and with that, the last piece falls into place, as this seems very much like the type of music that engages a film brilliantly, playing support with sweeping strings, hauntingly spare vocals, and the gentle beats of whatever the one lofi chick on YouTube has been listening to for the last five years.
It’s one part downtempo glory, another part epic fantasy, and one wholly joyous experience.
