I love this album, as I love Bombay Bicycle Club. I think it’s why I was so shocked that, when looking at this album, only one of the songs had more than 20 million streams - not a paltry number, by any account, but in my head, this was one of those iconic albums of the mid-2010s.
In any case, it’s a definitive standout in electropop, a pivot from Bombay’s earlier days as an indie rock outfit, testing the waters of new production fearlessly. Most evident in this regard is ‘Home By Now’, my favorite track off the entire record - teasing staccato piano reminiscent of Big Grams or a much more hip-hop oriented group, then pairing it with sparkling synths, sailing guitars, and a glorious duet between Jack Steadman and Lucy Rose.
It’s this ability to pivot sounds into maximalist space that makes this album so outstanding, in my opinion, and while it doesn’t always land, the moments where you’re floating in a space entirely comprised of the atmospheric sound created by this album are what make it so special.
