Album: Coffee and Ramen (2019)
Artist: Go! Child

I’m not quite sure what Coffee and Ramen is trying to accomplish, but I’m going to go ahead and say that it misses basically every mark set for it.
Take ‘Stipulation’ and draw the comparison to Stromae’s ‘Mon amour’, off last year’s Multitude. Both play to similar structure, using a plucky guitar beat, but while Stromae builds upon that infrastructure with steady progression through drums and soft vocals into a wider arrangement, it instead feels like Go! Child go nowhere with anything they do.
Soft arrangements have their place in music, of course, but with vocals this bad, so noticeably poor that even the hefty dose of autotune can’t pull them up to passable, the music needs to stand out, and instead, it shirks that duty to flitter around the soundscape with no real point in mind. Outside of the Weeknd-like ‘Threshold’, this is a miserable listen.
Rating: 4.4/10
Best Tracks: Threshold
Worst Tracks: Stipulation; Atlanta; Three Minutes; Good Morning
