Album: If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is (2021)
Artist: Still Woozy
Link:
From his first single in 2017, Sven Gamsky - professionally known as Still Woozy - captivated me, with slick melodies, earwormy production tinged with funky grooves, and a heartfelt earnestness that leaked from every single word he spoke, despite the often-comedic nature of his videos and some of his lyrics themselves.
Though ‘Goodie Bag’ and his earliest work don’t feature on this album, If This Isn’t Nice takes that same formula and applies it tremendously well across thirteen tracks. If my biggest gripe is that it sounds the same, at least they picked a fantastic sound to replicate so deeply.
This might be the easiest listen we’ve had so far, and we’ve had some real comfortable experiences. Few albums so consistently slither around, winding their way around your conscience - it’s Glass Animals without the unease. Though the monster in the closet is still there, it’s in the form of anxiety and heartbreak, less so the creeping jungle presence waiting to close a gaping maw around your throat.
It’s just really good music. Not sure there’s much more I can say beyond that.
