Welcome back to the Daily Spin, the series in which I review 365 albums during 2023. Month 2!
Additionally, I’ll be putting up a playlist with my favorite song from each album I’ve reviewed so far. Starting tomorrow, it’ll be updated daily.
Each album will be given a rating on a scale from 0 to 10. You can look at the entire set here.
If you want to suggest an album, good news! You can do so right here!
Album: Metamorphosis (2022)
Artist: Cloud Cult
Link:
Where I think Cloud Cult succeeds is asking the big questions - something they’ve done for two decades now. Despite that, it doesn’t get old and they don’t particularly show signs of slowing up.
Where Metamorphosis is excellent: the instrumentation, which feels natural and homely. The lyrics, which are powerful without being overbearing or unnecessarily weighty, trying too hard to be deep in a kiddie pool’s worth of water.
Where Metamorphosis struggles: the sameness of it all. As much as I appreciate what the Minnesota-based group is trying to do here, it does somewhat feel like they’re doing the same thing twelve times on this album, and after two decades of “asking the big questions”, sometimes I’m left to wonder what questions they’re searching out. At the end of the day, it feels a bit too much like a lot of struggle and strife over issues that they’re not really certain of.
Rating: 6.4/10
