Album: Multitude (2022)
Artist: Stromae

Multitude does not possess the same deftly-woven titanic drops and classically EDM-veined tunes that were near synonymous with Stromae’s ascendancy, through wildly-loved tracks like ‘Alors on danse’ and ‘Papaoutai’, but his penchant for discussing harsh topics under deceptively sweet beats stays.
Some of the production is a miss here - the second single and the opening duo on the album were befuddling choices that nearly took me out of listening to the album before my brain got the better of me and forced my hand - and for that, I’m quite grateful.
Stromae’s uninhibited willingness to hit hard topics is his greatest strength - though I can’t understand the majority of the lyrics, finding out that a song like ‘L’enfer’ is focused on the suicidal ideation that he confronts within himself endears me to the album.
At the end of the day, the chanting backing, the nigh-trappy beats, and earwormy production makes this a thoroughly enjoyable experience, even if there are pieces lost in translation.
