Album: Omit (2022)
Artist: Grivo
Link:
Grivo aims to strike the balance between doom metal, shoegaze, and something entirely their own with Omit - and in a sense, they do exactly that, cutting between the two central facets to their music with pounding guitars sending a wall of noise direct to receiver.
Though my ears didn’t entirely appreciate the barrage at times - and I do believe this is the album’s greatest shortcoming, a cloud of noise that overwhelms rather than satisfies, like an attempt at a deft finger massage by the World’s Strongest Man.
The album excels in the moment when it pares back the stronger forces to rely on the backing guitars that are the backbone of it all - and in doing so, eases off the gas, allowing the listener and the music to breathe in a way that gives the songs much-needed life. Too much of the album, however, falls into that failed place between noise and a ceaseless wave of sound, bland and braying.
