With their debut album, Hailaker perfectly encapsulates what rock-allegiant indie folk should feel like. The combination of powerful musicians - Lowswimmer and Jemima Coulter the front-facing duo, with Novo Amor providing backing support - lends itself perfectly to the atmosphere curated throughout this record, with each song holding distinct weight yet combining to reel a united thread.
Individual tracks combine to be greater than the whole without being swallowed by each other, and though it’s not a perfect album, I have felt no lack of enjoyment listening to it. ‘I Could Be Back’ is the clear favorite for me, a standout on a roster full of stars, the best example of Hailaker’s ability to switch between acoustic and electronic in an instant without drowning you in either.Â
This album is, if nothing else, perfectly balanced, a testament to what indie folk can be and a testament to the power of great musical minds together.Â
