Album: Roseville (2019)
Artist: Roseville
Link:
Roseville’s self-titled debut cuts right between post-rock and shoegaze to claim a pretty unique genre all to their own. Somewhat reminiscent of the emo-lite Day Wave in style, using reverb-heavy guitar to build songs under floating vocals, drums that waver just this side of pounding, it’s great music.
Where Roseville falls short is that, past the first three songs, the album loses complete sight of itself, falling into alternately too short (‘Candles’, ‘Wax’), or too long, dragging heavy on the mind and the ears (‘Colors’, ‘Sour’). Though the music doesn’t particularly deviate, it’s as much about pacing as it is anything, and Roseville misses badly here as an album. It’s deeply disappointing as someone who heard the first three tracks and had this one sitting well into the nines to have to grade this as I do, but the back half nearly totally loses me.
