Welcome back to the Daily Spin. For the uninitiated, this is the series in which I review an album every day of 2025.
As was the case two years ago, my favorite song from each album can be found at the playlist linked here.
Album: Something You Needed (2020)
Artist: flipturn

There’s not a lot here to hate - this is really easygoing indie rock with strong instrumentation, good guitar licks and some really lovely string work at the back end of songs to fill in other moments.
That said, there’s not a ton to love, either. A lot of this sound is really bog-standard indie music, the sort of stuff that’s dime a dozen in halls across the world, and though flipturn does it better than most, it’s nothing that feels truly groundbreaking for most of the EP.
For a record so critically lauded, I felt a little underwhelmed - and though I enjoyed it, such praise definitely colored my perception coming into the work. Either way, the strings at the end of the closer hit enough of those neuroses that all the boxes feel checked regardless - in the right moments, this is utterly stunning music.
