Welcome back to the Daily Spin. For the uninitiated, this is the series in which I review an album every day of 2025.
As was the case two years ago, my favorite song from each album can be found at the playlist linked here.
Album: No Sign of Weakness (2025)
Artist: Burna Boy
Link:
Afrobeat megastar Burna Boy dropped his eighth(!) album earlier today - and though I’m not intimately familiar with his music, I dabble enough in the peripheries for it to be a logical jumping point to test the waters.
Unfortunately, the answer does seem to be that this is by-and-large not for me. Burna is living his best rockstar dreams here, vocal-focused reggae-infused pop with African flavor hailing from his home country of Nigeria - but it misses for me at the base.
When it’s good, it’s so good - the beats are fresh, snappy, and full of that deliciously bouncy bass, but too frequently I’m left counting the moments between drops and trying to make it through the next bridge. The lyrics just aren’t there to support the songs when the beats can’t do it, and it results in a Sisyphean sort of effect to the climax of the album.
