I have listened through this album four times now, trying to put words to my feelings on it.
When it’s good, it’s really good - exactly the sort of glimmery indie pop/indie rock that Beach House perfected and Sub Pop, as a label, have come to be known for. There are a lot of really great moments illustrating the ebb and flow of love, a perpetual tide to be reckoned with, something that never truly leaves once you take note of it, merely retreating for a short time.
Too often, though, the album is indecisive - as much as the best moments call back to Beach House or similar surf rock stars, the record spends plenty of time standing at the counter deciding what to order, before deciding on nothing at all - tracks drag endlessly, and for an album that spans just 42 minutes, it has the ability to feel a lot more like 82.
When it gets the pacing where it needs to be, it finds that wheelhouse, and you’re treated to phenomenal pop that will have you feeling all sorts of things, but too often and too quickly, it slides into droning eternities.
