Welcome back to the Daily Spin, the series in which I review 365 albums during 2023.
Each album will be given a rating on a scale from 0 to 10. You can look at the entire set here. Additionally, you can check out a list of my favorite song from each album right here.
Album: Starcatcher (2023)
Artist: Greta Van Fleet
Link:
From the banked curves of NASCAR Heat 3 in 2018 to this album, Greta Van Fleet have always existed on the fringes of my musical interests, never really close enough for me to get super into them, but enough where I’ll hear a song in passing, nod along, and think to myself “hey, I should listen to their stuff more often”.
With this album, they’ve certainly earned my continued interest.
It’s not a perfect record - unfortunately, the vocals, particularly when they verge on screaming, don’t really do much of anything for me, but the guitars are beyond phenomenal, some of the best I’ve heard on an album this year. They’re harsh without being grating, just skating that knife edge of brutality in the way that all good butt rock does.
I can see any one of these songs appearing on a NASCAR video game soundtrack, and nothing is a higher compliment from me than saying I would love to roll around Talladega at 200 miles an hour to your music - so Greta and co., nice work, y’all.
