Album: Enter The Slasher House (2014)
Artist: Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks

I’m not really sure what I was expecting from this album, but I do know that what I got wasn’t that. It’s defiant of most preconceived notions of what you might get, transcending genre barriers in favor of a wildly oscillating presence that seems to fly between all sorts of experimental pop and rock flavors. Upon doing a little research, it became clear that Avey Tare is the moniker of one of the founding members of Animal Collective, and suddenly a lot of things fell into place.
My biggest gripe with this album, honestly, is that the vocals are almost entirely drowned out by the instrumentation through the entire album, and in the rare moments they’re not, it’s usually because Tare is screaming his way through a chorus - and I can’t lie, that just doesn’t work for me at all. It feels misplaced and counter to the energy of the rest of the record in a way that interrupts the listening flow rather than building upon it.
For an album titled Enter The Slasher House, it nails a lot of the atmosphere, eerie and dark in pleasing ways, mildly tense throughout, but it feels overwhelming too frequently, crushing itself with the weight of its own noise.
