Where yesterday was coffee shop music (derogatory, sort of), this is coffee shop music (complimentary), or the sort of music I could very well see playing at a Von Maur or something while I pretend to be fancy and browse menswear that’s definitely probably out of my price range for now. It’s got just a bit of a Lena Raine feel to it, the sort of anticipatory build that reminds me so much of the way Celeste’s soundtrack does the same as you scale that mountain.
It’s simple, jazzy, and while it never tends to stray too far from that working formula, my main gripe rests instead with the fact that I think most of these songs could be about half the length and still convey the same point. It’s a big reason why it doesn’t score higher, because for the first two or so minutes of every one of these songs, I’m tapping my foot along or bobbing my head, but around the four-minute mark, it’s starting to flag some, and the lack of lyrics, while a net positive, really doesn’t help in this regard.
Conceptually, though, I really like this album. It’s just enough to grab my attention and as I sit here working, I find myself thinking about how I’ll come back to this.
