Never thought I’d say this, but I’m getting a little tired of soft indie rock. Accidentally stacked the last few weeks with it a mile thick, and it may be one of my favorite genres, but I’m definitely getting to that point where I have Had Enough.
Not the fault of this album, though, so we carry on.
There’s a decent amount to like here - this is music with all the classic earmarks of California surf rock, lazy guitars ebbing and flowing under soft vocals, perfect music to drive along the beach with your windows down to.
It’s not exciting, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be, nor does it present any illusions that it is. With each passing moment, you get glimpses of stories, and yes, I wish they were deeper, but part of the allure of music like this is that surface-level depth, because at the end of the day, the focus isn’t nor should it be on the lyrics.
With enough energy to carry the album through to its completion, I can’t really fault it for the pacing, and it’s easy enough that bits and pieces of it will definitely make it into my rotations.
