Album: The Fall (2018)
Artist: Moxie
Link:
With The Fall, Moxie put together what is, in small doses, perfectly palatable alt-folk. The instrumentation is good, the production wavers in the vocals (the reverb really didn’t need to be cranked all the way up, and it really makes it seem like the lead vocalist is incapable of matching the songs the band has made and this was their solution) but is otherwise decent, and the hits run where they may.
Where the album struggles is that even 32 minutes feels way too long to sustain a tracklist like this - music like this. There’s just not enough push and pull between tracks to really excite and spark any feeling of newness, and what is there becomes bland and uninspiring over time. There’s only so many different ways to run this route, and eventually the same paths become worn and tired with time.
It’s a fine album. There’s nothing wrong with it on a molecular level. It’s just the type of music that, at the end of the day, doesn’t quite hold purchase with me over long periods of time.
