With Lily of the Valley, Funeral Suits do exactly what I think I expected of them with this album - they don’t underdeliver, and they don’t exceed my expectations. There’s nothing wrong with meeting the mark - if anything, I’d take that over missing it to the negative, but I do find myself a little whelmed, especially knowing how much I enjoyed the peak of the album.
Punchy rhythms and guitars that leave a bristling sort of feeling to it flow throughout the album with ease, keeping every second on tenterhooks with practiced ease. The producer of this album previously worked with big names in music, and it’s that practiced comfort that lends itself so beautifully to the album here, particularly in tracks like ‘All Those Friendly People’, where the band is allowed to shine at their peak.Â
It’s not all perfect - the calypso riddim of ‘Florida’ does little for my ears - but when it’s good, it’s right in that sweet spot, and that’s enough for me.Â
Rating: 7.6/10
Best Tracks: All Those Friendly People
