Album: Emotion (2015)
Artist: Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen’s transformation from ‘the woman who cursed the Earth with Call Me Maybe’ into a legitimate force in the pop sphere is one of the most underrated redemption arcs of the twenty-first century, one that cannot go unmentioned when talking about glow-ups. Kiss as an album was fine, if unspectacular, but it was nothing on the level that today’s album hits at.
Emotion is one of the single finest pop efforts this century, splicing delightful pop hooks, dynamic vocals, and powerful synths all into one complete package, serving up hit after hit, pushing forward with each track. It all feels cohesive without feeling samely, bringing forth the auras that we’ve seen so many pop luminaries try to replicate over the years.
Part of what makes Emotion so exemplary is the way that it feels so ahead of its time - the way that even now it feels like a solid pop record for the year 2023, if a little electronically-oriented. It’s production that has lasted against the odds, and that’s hard to come by these days.
