Though comparisons for this sort of punk pop sound have more often been drawn to groups like Veruca Salt and, to a lesser degree, Tokyo Police Club and Weezer, I feel like this is just sort of a Costco-brand Metric.
That’s still high praise, I should clarify - but the archetypes are similar enough that when I’m listening to this synth-driven punk sound that ballasts an airy female vocalist, I’m transported to a very specific dimension that’s mostly occupied by CHVRCHES, Purity Ring, and Metric, all bands that fall under that specific collective. They’re sitting at the poker table with sharks, and they’ve drawn the 2-6 off-suit.
It’s far from bad, but I’m so accustomed to a certain level of outstanding polish from a lot of the acts I associate with this sound, and perhaps unfairly, I extended that expectation to them as well. Considering that this is only their second album, though, and their first real venture into the pop sphere, this is a pretty sublime effort. Once it gets going, there’s a certain rollicking energy to it that I find myself attached to with a great deal of joy.
