Album: Bewitched (2023)
Artist: Laufey
Link:
Laufey emits nothing but dreamy jazz throughout her second full-length. In theory, that should be a wonderful experience, something to pull an hour seamlessly from my fingertips, but in practice becomes a bit of an exhausting slog.
Having hit the big-time through her TikTok-friendly jazz covers of pop music, it’s not hard to see why she smashed through the ceiling in her ascendancy - a strong voice, just smoky enough to befit most jazz clubs, and an ear for strong instrumentation keep her well-tuned to the type of music she should be making.
It’s just that an hour of her music tends to feel much closer to three or four - there’s not enough energy there to sustain a long listening session of this kind of music outside of very specific scenarios - and unfortunately, I don’t exist in one of those. C’est la vie.
