Unintentionally, this week has been a bit of a review of albums that were indisputably hit by the pandemic harder than most - earlier this week with Possession, and now with a much bigger album, one that weathered the crisis better - Future Nostalgia.
It’s not hard to see why - Dua Lipa’s electronica-filtered pop is a joy to touch on time and time again, and two songs over a billion streams make it clear what a fantastic reception this album enjoyed. Spotify’s 9th-biggest artist, with 72.6 million monthly listeners, and the platforms’ 16th-biggest artist by total streams - ever - is undeniably a tour de force at this point in the world of music, largely through a danceable sound, reliant on grooves and Dua Lipa’s chameleonic voice, the sort which can mold itself to just about any beat in a way that feels effortless.
Though I rarely dip my fingers into pop of most flavors, this is about as palatable as I find it, syrupy synths, the occasional sample, and a sultry vocalist that can bridge any shortcomings in the music itself - especially when, on an album like this, there are very few.
