Album: WOMB (2020)
Artist: Purity Ring

Somewhere between the elated electropop of CHVRCHES and the tense, haunting saws of Phantogram, Purity Ring has made a made for themselves as an entity entirely unto themselves. Through a decade-plus of music generation, they’ve carved an identity built on their sound, so deeply unique that it’d be irresponsible to claim it as anyone else’s.
In the same way that Lorn focuses so profoundly on anger and the deep unease that can permeate sound, Purity Ring reach for the explosive moments - curating an entire album around a woman’s coming of age, strong strings and synths alike paired with wickedly evocative percussion in such a manner that leaves no doubt to the duo’s passion for making deeply emotive noise.
It’s not always perfect - I think shrines, their debut album, was a more complete and comprehensive effort, but it’s a tantalizing showcase from one of the world’s more unique musical acts.
