Welcome back to the Daily Spin, the series in which I review 365 albums during 2023.
Each album will be given a rating on a scale from 0 to 10. You can look at the entire set here. Additionally, you can check out a list of my favorite song from each album right here.
Album: Fly (1999)
Artist: The Chicks

I have deeply fond memories of listening to the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks in my mom’s Ford Expedition, my brother and I in the backseat joined later by my siblings as we were acquainted with iconic tunes like ‘Travelin’ Soldier’ and ‘Landslide’ - a song I should that is still my favorite cover of the iconic Fleetwood Mac original, usurping the original.
Though the group was later effectively blacklisted from the charts thanks to their 2003 criticism of George Bush and the invasion of Iraq, they struck gold in the late nineties, powerful girl-group energy crossed with good old Southern charm and a healthy helping of Americana, the sort of music that, by and large, isn’t much for me.
Fly is an album largely comprised of those songs for me - sure, the balladic ‘Goodbye, Earl’ is a banger, but I’m left feeling a good bit like this album lacks the true power of the Chicks’ discography - each album generally has at least one chorus that absolutely draws you in, most of the time north of three, and yet I can only really solidly remember two of these tracks fondly.
