The Bracket
Argentina-Croatia
Two games decided by penalties - the Argentinians sending the Dutch home, while Croatia shocked Brazil to continue their journey. For Lionel Messi and Luka Modric, it’s likely their swan song, a final chance to get a run at the title they both so desperately want.
For Argentina, it’s a chance at their first title since 1986 with a win, while Croatia looks towards becoming the newest member of one of international sporting’s most select clubs. I’ve got the Croatians here - their staunch defense has stymied many, and it’ll send one of the greatest footballers of all time home without a title.
France-Morocco
Can the Cinderella run stay alive again, or has the clock finally come to midnight? France is undoubtedly going to be the toughest test yet, but Morocco has been resilient time and time against - the first African team to reach the semifinals of the World Cup now have to move beyond Iberia in their conquest of Europe.
Morocco has already achieved so much - they’re playing with house money here, while France aims to go back-to-back to assert their dominance as the force among forces to be reckoned with in world football. It’s all on the table, and though I’ve been bitten by my reluctance to bet on Morocco before, I still think I’ve got to give this one to France. An absolutely incredible run will come to a close against one of this generation’s most dominant forces.
Almost there! Four teams left, four matches to go. Exciting!
