Note: Most people know this team as “Southeastern Louisiana”, but the university’s preferred athletic branding is simply “Southeastern”. I will respect this.
Hammond Junior College was founded in 1925 and renamed itself Southeastern Louisiana College in 1928.1 The school began its football program in 1930 and adopted the “Lions” nickname in 1931.
All available Southeastern sources simply say that the school “first chose the lion as its mascot in 1931”. I could find no further information on how this came to be, and a request for information from the university has gone unanswered as of press time.
Southeastern’s mascot is a costumed lion named Roomie in honor of Hollis “Roomie” Wilson, a famed athlete and longtime professor at Southeastern.
