Chosen in: 1955
Chosen by: Student C. A. Butler in a name-the-team contest via student body vote
Welcome to California! I’m using each individual school’s preferred athletic branding, so the order of some schools here might be a tad confusing. I promise I’m not just skipping teams.
In 1955, California Baptist College1 was still getting off the ground and had just moved into the Riverside campus they still call home today. The school administration decided their sports teams should have a nickname, so they left it to the students to think of the possibilities.
Students submitted more than 30 different names, which the administration whittled down to six for an October 13 final vote: Beavers, Braves, Condors, Buffaloes, Mustangs, and Lancers. The last of these, submitted by C. A. Butler, won handily.
I legitimately couldn’t find anything interesting about this school’s mascot, Lance the Lancer, so enjoy this promotional video featuring young children wearing “California Baptist Class of 20XX” shirts that are now disturbingly close to the present year.

They wouldn’t become a university until 1998.
