Chosen in: 1965
Chosen by: Student body vote
The school that just last year renamed itself Houston Christian University was founded as Houston Baptist College in 1960 and began playing intercollegiate sports soon after. Early in the school’s history, on May 11, 1965, the student body held a vote to select a mascot, and “Huskies” won. I can’t find anything else on this vote; nothing on who suggested the name or what other nicknames “Huskies” beat.
Live mascots have been present for most of the school’s history, as it became Houston Baptist University in 1973 and then Houston Christian University (using “HCU” for branding purposes) in 2022. Their current live mascot is Wakiza “Kiza” III, born in 2017 and cared for by the school’s Sled Team. HCU also has a costumed mascot named Mingo.
