Chosen in: 1976, officially
Chosen by: The Athletic Council
What is now High Point University was founded in 1924 and began intercollegiate athletics almost immediately. Athletics were administered by what seems to be the era’s equivalent of an athletics department (they called it the Athletic Council), headed by J. P. Boylin and including two other faculty members and two students. In Fall 1925, this council named High Point’s teams the Purple Panthers.
The shortening of “Purple Panthers” to “Panthers” appears to have been commonplace since the nickname was established, but in 1976, the college rebranded and officially removed “Purple” from the nickname.
High Point has a costumed (purple) panther mascot named Prowler, who “a this time…is not available for public appearances at this time”.
