Chosen in: 1947
Chosen by: School administration
Sacramento State College1 was established in 1947. Before any intercollegiate athletic competition at the school, administration took it upon themselves to select a school mascot. The two finalists were the elk and the hornet, but the administration did not think the former was aggressive enough, so they chose the latter. They announced their decision on December 5, 1947. The Hornets debuted in 1948, first taking the court in men’s basketball.
Since the beginning, Sacramento State’s mascot has been a costumed hornet named Herky.
