Chosen in: 1923
Chosen by: Head football coach Henry B. Hucles
The Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth was established in 1876, changing its name to Prairie View State Normal School just three years later.1
Intercollegiate athletics at the school technically date back to 1907, as a football team took the field for a one-off game that year and one more in 1920, but they didn’t start playing regular schedules until 1923. Their initial head coach was Henry B. Hucles, who nicknamed his team the Panthers. It’s unclear why.
The costumed panther mascots…yep, they sure do exist. I can’t even find any information on their names.
