I’m gonna level with you. I started my undergraduate studies at Nebraska and finished them at Minnesota. Iowa’s my least favorite team in the country and I don’t wanna write any more words on them than I absolutely have to.
Luckily, there aren’t many words to write. It’s not really clear how sports teams at the University of Iowa came to be known as the Hawkeyes except for that Iowa residents were already colloquially known as Hawkeyes. The school began playing football in 1889 and men’s basketball in 1892; the first reference to either team as the “Hawkeyes” that I could find was a football game story from 1896.
What’s that? You wanna know why people started calling Iowans “Hawkeyes”? Well, read this piece from Iowa City’s own Stephanie Catlett, who cares way more about this than I ever could.

In my 3rd grade classroom, everyone in my elementary school was connected to a college, to inspire more kids to go to college.
My class was Iowa.
That obviously then makes them by 5th favorite Big Ten team
