Mount Saint Mary’s College and Seminary1 was founded in 1808 just south of Emmitsburg, Maryland, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, teaching novice geographers everywhere that yes, there are mountains in Maryland. The term “Mountaineer” gradually became used to refer to all members of the college and seminary community, well before sports were even a twinkle in their eyes. When they started playing men’s basketball in 1908, using the term as the team’s nickname was just obvious.
The mascot for Mount St. Mary’s is a costumed mountain man named Emmit S. Burg.
