On November 13, 1909, the University of Arkansas’ football team, then known as the Cardinals, played a rivalry game against LSU at a neutral site in Memphis. They won that game 16-0,1 then hopped on the train back to Fayetteville. A horde of eager students were waiting at the train station for their return, so head coach Hugo Bezdek satiated them by boasting about the team’s victory, describing his players as “a wild band of razorback hogs”. It caught on instantly and the school officially changed their nickname to Razorbacks the next year.
